eye4style Interview - Jewelry Designer Nancy Dobbs Owen

Nancy Dobbs Owen is an independent jewelry designer and performer based in LA. She describes her collection as "simultaneously feminine and edgy" (a favorite combination here at eye4style!) and started designing after being in a car accident while part of the national tour of Phantom of the Opera. Owen needed a simple 'something' to fill her time until she could return to the stage but jewelry design proved to be addictive and her line is now sold at several boutiques in California.

She answered a few burning questions for eye4style readers.

What inspires you to create?

Aside from the bills gathering?? Kidding. I am most inspired by the feel of the stones and the way that they naturally come together...almost as if I've just gathered them off of the floor. That may develop into something quite intricate and "designed", but it starts very organically. For instance, the crushed chains that I am using in this current collection were inspired by a ball of aluminum foil.

Describe your design aesthetic in three words.

Organic, feminine, magical

What are the biggest trends in jewelry for Fall 2008?

NECKLACES. Which makes me very happy. There are a lot of big, thrown together pieces. I prefer the layers and mixtures to have a little more form: a bunch of different chains that have various weights and colors but are similar in length.... something that looks a bit planned.

BRACELETS; Heavier and or layered....with statement stones. I like them rougher....

Your Statement Necklaces are totally on trend - in fact, I am totally in love with the Triple Strand Rocker Necklace. Do you have a favorite way to style that piece?

Once again, I love layers. The Rocker Necklace layered with the linear, layered with a long rocker.

We're obviously avid shoppers here at eye4style. What are three of your favorite stores and why?

Only 3??? I love Catherine Jane in San Francisco and Mill Valley CA. Catherine is a designer and makes the most gorgeous ladylike clothes with a sense of humor. Her designs make everyone look amazing and of course she carries great accessories....Online, I love Shopbop and my favorite department store is Saks, but only in SF. In LA I love American Rag and Il Primo Passo on Montana Ave for shoes and accessories (Editor's Note - you can also shop Nancy's line here.)
