Does This Harness Make My Vulva Look Fat? [Or How I Learned to Climb at Brooklyn Boulders]

While I don't believe in New Year's resolutions, I do believe in ADVENTURE, and earlier this year, I vowed to myself that 2011 would be the year of...well, exactly that. And now, here we are in October, and I've tackled every imaginable activity, or at the very least, those that pique my interest, including burlesque, pole-dancing, boxing and trapeze. Last weekend was no different, as I hit Brooklyn Boulders with my friend, fellow ADVENTURER, Tamar of Fashion Binge.

For those not familiar, Brooklyn Boulders is the largest indoor climbing gym in New York. Encompassing what feels like a solid block of Brooklyn and smelling an awful lot like a martial-arts gym (interpret that as you see fit), the maze-like space offers a bevy of climbing walls suited to bouldering, belaying, conquering your latent fear of heights, etc.

After strapping on an incredibly FLATTERING harness, Tamar and I got things moving with the Learn the Ropes class ($75), which included an hour-long lesson in belaying (that is, climbing the rock wall, while a partner and a belay device anchor and support you), as well as a day pass to further practice said climbing and belaying, and a return pass for even more, you guessed it, climbing and belaying (fun, fun!) What I liked most about climbing was that it felt like a mental challenge as much as a physical one. In fact, forgot your fear of heights, finding the most strategic spot for your hand or your foot is like solving a puzzle - and it's an amazing exercise in teamwork too.
