Candy, chocolates, cards, and jewelry are now expected gifts on Valentine's Day, but it wasn't always so. Gift-giving for this holiday is a relatively modern invention, with the first Valentine Day's card not appearing on the scene until the 1400's when the Duke of Orlean wrote a poem to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London. This may have been the start, but cards didn't actually get popular until the 1800's. That's when they exploded in popularity, going so far as hiding gifts inside the card within a special receptacle that could hold jewelry, diamonds, and watches, in the most extravagant of cards.
While most people aren't as sly with their gifts anymore, the appearance of a small velvet box still brings delight to a special Valentine. Romance that is mysterious, playful, and extravagant isn't just for Victorian tastes, but holds a special place in everyone's heart.
