Nick Arrojo Replaced by Ted Gibson on What Not to Wear?

Hair master Ted Gibson (stylist to Anne Hathaway, Angelina Jolie and Debra Messing, among other celebs) announced today on Twitter that today is his "1st day as the hair guru on" TLC's What Not to Wear, presumably replacing the stylist fans love to hate, Nick Arrojo.

I've had the pleasure of meeting Ted several times in both his salon and backstage at New York Fashion Week and I can attest to the fact that he's not only talented - he's also darling and delightful.  To learn more about Ted, his salons and product line, visit www.tedgibsonbeauty.com. Btw, has anyone here been watching the "V" series? I just love Morena Baccarin's short pixie cut.
hopefully, she will inspire a lot more women to get similiar cuts in the future.
I know I'm contemplating getting one myself. probably won't be until next summer though. ;-)

What not to wear was one of my favorite shows. I don't watch anymore now that Nick is gone. Nick doesn't hate long hair like some claim, that is BS. Nick was a key factor in the success of that show. Ted is boring. I can't stand watching him, I fall asleep. He has zero personality. Nick was funny as hell.

WHO EVER WAS THE IDIOT WHO POSTED THIS PLEASE LEARN HOW TO SPELL AND WRITE ENGLISH. NOT EVERYONE LOOKS GOOD WITH LONG HAIR, NICK WAS ALWAYS NICE AND TRIED HIS BEST TO MAKE SOME VERY UNATTRACTIVE WOMEN LOOK DECENT. I AM VERY SAD TO SEE HIM GO. AS TO CARMINDY, SHE IS GREAT!

and what is so wrong with what was posted. Carmindy do you often look yourself up online? how sad is that. However, "melissa" isn't the one who posted these. That's pretty assuming of who ever wrote this. I went on this site to see if the show was cancelled. That is it, and that is all. Not to bash anyone. Saw my name and found it pretty funny that anyone would think I'd write a bunch of crap. Who actually cares and who even has the time.

to add to my last msg, just in case anyone may feel like responding to me, don't bother, I was on this site by mistake as it didn't offer what I was looking for and since everyone here, maybe not everyone sorry no offense meant to anyone on this site, but people can be cruel and negative, I have no use for that in my life so this will be the last time I come here. Save your breath. And maybe not rush to judgment when you think you know what you're talking about. peace out. hbdolphin

Best news I've heard in a long time! Nick was not a bad person, I thought he was very sweet and kind. But he needs major psychotherapy...... Any woman over a certain age, weight, body type etc he gave the same awful 'helmet' haircut. Same with long hair, he hated it, even when it looked good and just needed a little freshening instead of butchering. Yes, short hair can be cute on SOME women. Who want it and like it....but, but, but..... in our culture (and it IS very cultural) short hair is also a way of stripping a woman of her youth and beauty, of telling her she's no longer 'worthy' of long hair because of her age-weight-body type etc. Most of the women I know who have short hair don't like it, but to quote "It's more convenient so I put up with it."

Ironically, all the 'other' women on WNTW had long hair, so you know they didn't let Nick within a mile of their heads.

I haven't watched the show since last year, having a conversion moment when I saw that the show had far more of a negative effect on women than positive. I'm glad to see they've made a change in the right direction. Now if they could just get Stacy and Clinton over their ageism and biases, I might watch again.

Nick was okay, I did not think he was mean, just forceful. For pity's sake why agree to come onto a makeover show and refuse to put on makeup or get a flipping haircut or at least a trim. It is a part of the package, and that nanny with the long hair...yes the color was okay and it was very healthy, but there was no shape, just a heavy mess. It is sad she missed on an opportunity to improve her appearance. Nick really did not know what to do with ethnic hair. Curly yes, ethnic no, and there is a difference. That is why women with any African or Asian hair texture had a mess going on when they left his chair. I noted they usually did not look very good when seen in follow up footage, because they could not manage it on their own. I have hopes that Ted Gibson may do better, but I will wait and see.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Nick Arrojo and am VERY disappointed that they have replaced him. I shall miss him a lot.

Dude, just because all models have long luxurious hair doesn't mean every body looks good with that length hair. In fact it's rare that people do. Nick did certainly cut a lot of people's hair but you've got to keep this in consideration: People do a bunch of shitty stuff to there hair, let it go to waste, cut it themselves, box-dye it, do know how much damage that does? Nick had to cut that shit off, of you've got crappy, uncooperative hair. Short hairstyles are freaking cute, and not many people realize that they look much better with it short. Leave him alone assholes.

What was that hair style last night? She still looked like a poodle that needed clipping after he was done. Tame that hair, call Nick.

What Not To Wear Man said...

I'm so pissed that Nick is no longer on the show! From a straight man's point of view, I thought he did a great job with what he was given, meaning the limitations that are set by the people getting a hairstyling that say they don't want it cut, etc. I've seen a handful of new episodes with Ted cutting hair and I think he sucks! His styles suck and he's boring with no personality! I can't believe he does hairstyling for stars! They must already have awesome hair or something. If Carmindy ever leaves, I'll be crushed! She does an awesome job! I wish the show would have more episodes with guys on them and guys of all different sizes, not just a "normal" med-large size. But anyway, boo to Ted's styles.

Anonymous said...

What makes anyone think Nick knows what the best hair style is for a woman? People say, "Oh he gives them what is best for them and their facial shape" NOT!! Nick is scissor happy and he hates long hair. I'm glad he is gone. He insisted that every woman have short hair and yet Stacey and Carmindy both had long hair, kind of a double standard don't you think? If a woman insisted on having long hair he would have such a bad attutude toward her and have a chip on his shoulder the entire time he was styling her hair. I never would have gone on that show just simply because of Nick, I don't care about the five thousand dollars. He was a deterrent from wanting to go on that show. He has no concept of true beauty on a woman.

Anonymous said...

SORRY, but not everyone looks gook in short hair ether!! Typically, long hair is more beautiful than short hair. Short hair butches women and cuts off their femininity, why do you think princesses in fairy tales always have long hair? Most of the women I know hate their short hair and are only wearing it that way for convenience. Cutting your hair well immediately age you and make you look more matronly, like a soccer mom. When people think you should cut your hair and tell you it makes you look younger, it's a LIE, don't believe them. Long hair is associated with beauty and youth, don't let them kid you.

We love to hate Nick? I love to love Nick. He is a sweetheart....never seen him be a jerk in the least. I think he does a good job on the hair....it's the idiots he has to work with that think they have long, beautiful, luxurious hair (when it's actually thin, scraggily and stringy) and they won't let him cut much off.

Lynne RT said...

So what that he does Anne Hathaway's hair? She has no particular style...it's usually just long or medium. It's nothing she couldn't do at home herself if she weren't too rich to do it herself. Flo at the local Beauty Barn could do HER hair. NICK, PLEASE COME BACK!!!

Anonymous said...

I think part of the reason Nick cut a lot of hair short is because many of the women on the show do not take great care of their hair. And I know a lot of women cry, but I think that has more to do with them using long hair as a shield or cover up and they suddenly feel naked without it. Many of the women on the show also cry from feeling totally overwhelmed by the whole process and fall apart during shopping and at the end of the day. I would also say Nick's cuts had a lot to do with ease of care.

Anyway, I wonder if the people who applauded his leaving and welcomed Ted coming on board are feeling the same now. If you thought women had bad reactions to Nick's cuts, holy cow! Women seem really unhappy with what Ted does to them.

Anonymous said...

I have to admit that Nick's hairstyling segments and Carmindy's makeup segments were my favorite parts of the show. I loved Nick's personality and I hate to see him replaced. Ted seems all right but personally I don't think the show will be the same without Nick.

Anonymous said...

Wow! I see so many people are saying what I have felt about Nick; he has a portfolio of three haircuts, curly hair usually ends up hacked and I too cringe as he waves the shorn locks in front of his latest victim or drops the huge chunks onto their laps. Ever hear of Locks of Love? And who missed the irony of both the females on the show having long hair? Carmindy needs to expand her color pallette. Pink on everyone? Seriously! Ted hasn't impressed me yet, but as a cosmetologist for over 20 years, I don't envy them having to pick the right cut and style EVERY time for all to see!

Anonymous said...

All most all of the people on the show say that they love their hair after it's cut.

Anonymous said...

I've watched a few of the new episodes with Ted. All I can say is "BORING!!" I hope his scissors are sharper than his personality. I wish they kept Nick and got rid of Carmindy. She is so full of sugar, she makes my teeth hurt.
Many posts say Nick gave the same old haircut. So not true. The only one I see doing the same thing over & over & over again is Carmindy.
I love Stacy & Clinton. Now when I watch the show, I stay tuned the for the shopping only. I turn it off when it's time for hair and makeup - it will put me to sleep anyway.

Ted may be a good stylist, but I just don't feel he brings anything to the show as far as personality. Quite frankly, I find him boring. And just because you've grown attached to your long hair doesn't mean it looks good on you, so just because he cuts it short doesn't mean he's just being evil.

please bring back nick arrojo he is a much better hair dresser. although some of the hairstyles are pretty that ted does they don't flatter the face shapes of the people . NICK YOUR THE BEST U R #1 I miss your sparkling personality too.

I am stylist myself and love watchng this show...I like Nick and his work and think he is very talented. Picture your face as the art work and your hair as the frame. Not one frame fits every peice of art. When I cut someones hair and they ask for advice on a style, I always am honest and tell them what will work and what won't...if they do not like what I suggest, I do not force it apon them and I do what they want. Most good stylist can look at a client and in the first few seconds figure them out. I have found that the more confident the client, the more they are apt to be open to a new look. Your hair does not define you, you define you. In other words you wear the cut the cut does not wear you. A woman who only feels sexy with long hair or because her husband likes her hair long is not confident. I think Halle Barre is sooo much sexier with her short hair than long...she looks younger, more vibrant and more confident. I woud never take style advice from my husband, unless he was in the industy. Most men see long hair the same way they see breasts and butts. As far as the texas woman, I think it is sad to reach middle age an not have evolved behond such insecurity and self centeredness. She looked so much younger and vibrant with her "nic " cut. She aged herself by trying to wear a style that was suited for a younger woman and out-dated as well. Her daughter's hair looked fried and out-dated as well. This Texas woman does not like herself and is still trying to be something she no longer is. If you look at people who set trends and always look gorgeous, they never look back only forward. The trick is to look ageless.

FINALLY!!!! I cannot stand NICK! His answer is to always chop off their hair, and they don't always look better! Really buddy you can't come up with ANY other idea other than chopping it all off? what kind of Freaking hair dresser are you anyways? Not every girl wants their hair gone. Get some new ideas for once so we're maybe surprised finally? It's really never that surprising when he's doing it, because we know you ALWAYS CUT IT OFF!
boo to you nick. boo to you.

I'm a 39 years woman from a Greek island and I kept thinking as I was watching this show, there must be a different culture thing with the hair their, because I hated almost EEVERY cut! And EEEEEVERY cut, I was getting anxious as I was watching Nick Arrojo not caring about the women cutting their hair!!! I was crying with that woman from Texas. It's not the haircut, Nick Arrojo. It's the woman behing the haircut that's more important!
I'm so happy that most of the people here are thinking the same and bravo to whom ever decided to change Nick with Ted.
I love this show cause of the things I learn and the positive result it brings to life. At the end, Stacey, Clinton, Carmindy, all of them teach the woman on each show how to bring the best of her out. And the result is stunning! And... mmm it made me think of my own dressing habits. Sooo... THANK YOU guys because in the summer I bought two dresses after 5 years not wearing any dresses, and I'm very happy whenever I wear one of them!
;) the other one needs some alterations.
So happy I can do alterations on clothes! So happy for telling us!
Love you guys!

Wow, I was so surprised they abruptly let Nick go! But I agree regarding his cookiecutter cuts. On the more recent shows, he was starting to cut them all the same and there was more than one episode where my mouth just dropped because the woman looked so much WORSE than when she started. He gave himself a few haircuts that didn't look so hot either ... ???

amagod121 said...

Every haircut he gave looked like puppy dog ears flopping over the woman's ears. And furthermore, he himself had greasy, messy hair and admitted that he only washed it once every 5 weeks or something like that. Holy heck, I'd run for the hills if my HAIRDRESSER admitted he/she only washed their hair once in a blue moon.

It seems that people are unimpressed with Nick for giving many similar haircuts. The difference, I think between cutting hair on the show and otherwise, is that the subjects of the show are generally unwilling to do anything differently. They are stuck in a stylistic rut and are oftentimes very stubborn about altering their appearances. If he were to cut difficult-to-manage hairstyles for many of these people, I believe most of them would become discouraged with the upkeep and demands of everyday styling.
I was once growing my hair out really long, and I became so obsessed with the length itself that I began to ignore the condition of my hair. One day, at a point when my hair was below my waist (I have fine hair, so you can imagine the condition it was in) I looked at the ends and realised that it wasn't looking as good as I had believed beforehand. So, I went out that day and had my hair cut to just above my jawline. It's now in remarkably wonderful shape.

Sorry but I dont really like the new guy Ted. Most of you say Nick did the same hair cuts but have you been watching the new episodes? This is what Ted does..he lightens just a bit, adds highlights, cuts it shorter, aaand styles it the Exact same way it was before.... I can NOT stand the way he does their hair! To me, their hair looks Exactly the same..he just gets lucky because Carmindy comes in and really makes the change.

I met Nick Arrojo in person and he is really cool and down to earth. Don't judge his personality based on the fact that "some" of you don't like the haircuts he gave those women on What Not To Wear. That man came to this country with 1500 bucks and is now living the American dream. His Arrojo products are simple but awesome. They really work and are heavenly. Nick Arrojo is a firm believer in education and working hard to achieve your goals. Every woman doesn't need a short hair do and I agree with that, however, long hair doesn't equate PRETTY. There are many women with really long hair and it does absolutely NOTHING for them. A hairstyle should be cut and framed for the face, in regards to shape and features. Color, in regards to eye color and complexion. A REAL HAIRSTYLIST knows this. So those who have no experience in the beauty industry as a hairstylist really have no room to tell this man, who is a professional, how to do his job. Nick Arrojo is a really humble guy, but I can tell you this; He has an EMPIRE to run so he has better things to do anyway.

Curlylob said...

Sure, this is an old thread, but I just have to laugh over the way the Arrojo-bob fans sound like a cross between cult members and infant circumcision advocates.
This extreme push for other women to get their hair cut into identical bobs... well, it's just a little bit creepy.

Okay, I dont think that Stacy, Clinton or Carmindy need to be replaced, Nick however i will be glad to see leaving. Stacy and Clinton are amazing and i love them :) And Carmindy shows the ladies how to do makeup that wont take very long but will look amazing and still natural. Whoever says that she "cakes" makeup on is lying. Have you googled her without makeup? She is gorgeous, the makeup just brings out her features more. Nick has disappointed me a lot because he acts like he knows best. A stylists job is not to chop off everyones locks because it will give them a "change". A stylists job is to take into consideration what the client wants and make suggestions. You wouldnt want to walk into a salon that ignores what YOU want and just chops off all your hair. I wouldnt say hes a "horrible stylist" i just think he needs to listen to what the client wants. Excited for Ted to get started :)

Anonymous said...

I know one thing- Nick cannot cut minority hair. He was sometimes good on straight hair - but that is a big "sometimes." I was so upset to see what he did to this black woman who had spent years growing her hair naturally (that kind of hair often grows at a slower rate). He just chopped it off and relaxed it. He couldn't handle the hair in it's natural form - couldn't even flat iron it. His skills are definitely limited.

After two years of watching Ted Gibson, all I've seen from him is (1) long, boring hair, and (2) lots of kiss-kiss for the contributors. He seems like a nice fellow, but not an adventurous stylist. Nick was wonderful - he had a feel for the architecture of the woman's face and how to make the hair flatter her. I still miss Nick.

Anonymous said...

I do think that Nick Arrojo seems like a very sweet man but I have to agree that his haircuts were really bad. As a fashion designer, I was consistently horrified by the unflattering cuts he would give the women.

I will literally never forget the time he took this woman with incredibly beautiful red curly hair and cut it way too short and then STRAIGHTENED it. I mean, this woman had the kind of Botticelli hair that is pretty much every curly-haired person's dream. It was gorgeous. And then he turned her into some boring looking soccer mom.

It was awful and I felt so badly for her.

Nice man, awful hair stylist. I honestly don't know how he became so successful. Cult of personality and an accent perhaps?

Pastor Diane said...

Now that Ted has been on the show for awhile, have you noticed how many short haircuts HE has given and how many women he has made cry? I loved Nick and was sorry to see him go. I also like Ted. But I think both of them perhaps make a mistake here and there. And most women on the show with long hair haven't been maintaining it. Damaged long hair doesn't flatter anyone.

HATE Nick's haircuts!!!
Short is NOT best for every woman!!! It's like he wanted to show a dramatic change just to hack off inches of hair for a shock factor!!!! The one lady, Joanne, who had the 80's look was given a haircut from Nick that aged her 20 years!!! She was a young lady in her early 40's and after Nick cut her hair super short and "helmet" like- she looked about 20 years older!!!! It was such a shame because Stacey & Clinton helped her get a cool new wardrobe. I'm not shocked Nick was replaced. I was sick to death of his insistence on cutting everyone's hair super short!!!!!! Ted is SO much better!!!!!! Good riddance Nick!!!!!!

Ted Gibson is a true hairstylist with better training and interpersonal skills than Nick. Nick is a haircutter not a stylist. There are big differences between the two. As New York stylist to the stars in the 60s & 70s; I had Sassoon training as well. His technique was geometric cutting. He never taught styling. When servicing a client for the first time, a consultation should be about the client fears, dislikes etc. Nick cut hair short because he is not trained in all methods or facial enhancements. Clients leave happy or you have failed. Its not about what the stylist wants Nick; it is about the client and what is important to her. Hairdressers LISTEN LISTEN LISTEN!

Anonymous said...

Still miss Nick and his bubbly personality. The first time I watched Ted, he was so femmy that he seemed like he was going to cry right along with the client! Geez. I still think he's just not half as good as Nick was. If I ever get to NYC I am going to get an appointment with Nick and let him do whatever he wants, as long as he gives me directions so someone else can maintain the cut. People have stated it over and over on this thread - most of the women who come into WNTW have hair that matches their wardrobes - used-up, abused, fried, damaged, in need of a REMAKE which is what he gives them! You can't fix burnt-up hair and in some cases, he probably thought about shaving their heads because their whole head of hair was damaged! I could *not* believe the Texan Big-Hair Gal who went right back to her same old look! Just shows you how stubborn Texans can be! LOL

I still watch the show and will be sad to see it end, but I think the Nick episodes were better than the last few seasons with Ted. I would have loved to see Nick get his own show, but I guess he's happy running his salon and school. Well, at least us regular folks have a decent chance at getting him for a cut and style...Watch Episode 12 on Youtube for a real transformation, that cut he gave Erin is just too cute for words!!

LOVED the fact that the 'new nick' LEFT THE CHICK'S HAIR LONG, WOW!! :D was he allowed to do that!?!1? Is he going to be out of a job now?!?! LOVE! <3

i used to watch that show & think 'someday, someone is going to sabotage me like this....i dunno what not to wear'... then i'd see the nick haircut portion & say 'NO (bad word that starts with an eff & rhymes with "ducking") WAY! would i EVER go on that show!" & whew! crisis averted! :D

I really don't like it when the people are so upset and crying that they don't want their hair cut and he chops it all off anyways. And many of the comments here reinforce the same idea. You don't need long hair to feel sexy or feminine. That's ridiculous. You can be bald and be feminine. But some people prefer long hair. I have very long hair and I love it. If I had to lose it for cancer or some other reason I would not feel like I lost my identity or anything, but if someone cut off my hair without respecting my feelings I would be very upset. It's a boundaries thing. If you prefer short hair don't tell women with long hair they look dowdy. That just encourages them to insult you back and say you look like a boy. In all actuality it's simply different preferences for how you want to look. Most of you posting so rudely about those who are upset by the cuts probably wouldn't like it if someone grabbed you and arbitrarily changed your hair color or gave you a new cut with no input allowed from you because "they know best". They don't. You know what you like best.
