While I've somehow managed to resign myself to the fact that I'll never be Dita Von Teese (above, at the legendary Crazy Horse Paris), that hasn't diminished my interest in the beauty of burlesque. Blessedly, I live in the greatest city in the world, and in addition to the amazing museums, restaurants and boutiques at my disposal, there's also the New York School of Burlesque.
Boasting a roster of instructors who are current performers (including the gorge Veronica Varlow), The New York School of Burlesque offers a wide variety of workshops and classes for women - and women only. Some are intended for those with fleeting interest in burlesque/irresistible draw to feather boas and Swarovski crystals, while others prepare ballsier types (those with a serious desire to perform!) for the stage. For the record, I fall somewhere in the middle.
On a recent Thursday night, I took action and headed over to a non-descript NoHo studio for a little Flirting with Burlesque - a nifty, 60-minute intro to a world of bumps, grinds, shimmies and shakes. I can't say enough good things about the class; my instructor was a positive and funny, the moves were fun, sexy and empowering and I left that evening with a nice little boost to my self-confidence - the kind that only tackling a new challenge can bring. I'll be back to burlesque soon - and next time, I plan to bring an army of my best girlfriends with me.
