My love of the skinny jean is well-documented, here on eye4style and in the world at large. But, much to my initial dismay, a return to the flare leg jean and a '70's silhouette is among the HUGEST trends for Spring '11 and one that I'm just starting to warm up to.
One of the difficulties about the return to a a wide leg, bell bottom or flare silhouette is that it requires (let's be candid) a style redux of sorts. Take, for example, those comfy, flowy tops that you've filled your closet with in the past few years. I mean, they perfectly balanced a skinny silhouette, no? Right-o, but if you're investing in a flare for the season, you'll need to embrace a MUCH more fitted silhouette above the waist, or risk looking like a fatty. You can also try tucking in your top (as I did above), and cinching with a belt - be it basic or statement.
Shoes are also an important consideration (oh, aren't they always?) Shelve those entirely adorable ballet flats, round toe pumps and knee-high boots (if you pair with a flare, you'll appear to be entirely footless...never good) and pull out or invest in a chic almond or true pointy toe flat, pump and/or bootie to balance out the look.
Head to toe, here's how I've styled a bell bottom today:
- Tom Ford Anouk Sunglasses (no longer available, but find on eBay here)
- MAC Russian Red Lipstick
- Case Study Leather & Fur Trim Coat (gift, no longer available)
- Tucker by Gaby Basora Silk Blouse (no longer available, other colors/prints here)
- J.Crew Studded Leather Belt (no longer available, similar styles here)
- J Brand Babe Bell Bottom in Starless (gift)
- Loeffler Randall Ramona 3 Strap Snap Pump (no longer available)
- Swarovski Nirvana Ring
- Balenciaga Giant Covered City in Raisin (no longer available, other colors here)
Are you returning to a wide leg jean for Spring '11? Do tell.
