How To: Style a Floral Shoe for Spring

Earlier this week, we chatted about how to style a bold and wildly patterned shoe, thanks to the folks at Desigual and ideeli. Next up, florals! After all, what could be more appropriate for spring?

Florals, however, CAN be a bit of a style challenge, particularly when your tastes lean a little more minimal or edgy (as mine do!)  BUT, where there's a will, there's a way - here are some ideas on how to work a sweet floral print into your look, from the bottom up.

  • If you're eyeing an open-toed style, like the sweet peep-toe platforms shown above, try creating a little contrast with a foiled metallic or glittery pedicure. I love the idea of gold or silver!
  • For a bolder, more graphic look, choose a LARGER floral print as opposed to something dainty and wee.
  • Use a floral shoe with a more delicate pattern to tear down a more downtown look. For example, I'm LOVING the idea of a flowery pattern adding contrast, femininity and sweetness to a cropped dark indigo jean, harem pant or jumpsuit.
  • When in doubt, go OBVIOUS! Don't hesitate to partner a floral pump, platform or espadrille with a lovely white eyelet skirt or fitted chambray dress. It's a style cliche for a reason - it works!

Do you have any floral shoes in your closet for spring? Tell me all in the comments, and for more beautifully blooming shoes, visit MyHotShoes.com.

While all thoughts are my own, this post was produced in association with My Hot Shoes.

OOTD: The Power of Simplicity

Despite my occasional love of the sartorially absurd - think glitter, sequins and paillettes - my style in recent months has evolved to a much simpler, and dare I say it, happier place. While I still enjoy a little fashion DECADENCE on the regular (I'm a woman, after all - made of flesh and blood, you guys), Thursday's OO was anchored by two timeless, indefatigueable classics - the perfect chambray shirt and a clean white jean.

Head to toe, here's what I wore:

OOTD: A Burberry Hangover

As we all know by now, I believe firmly in investing in the basics - wardrobe classics that will take you day to day, season to season and year to year. Of course, a trench falls among the most classic items imaginable, but even I was not mentally prepared for the significant investment that I spontaneously made on Sunday, when I popped by the Burberry flagship on 57th Street after a particularly rigorous Physique 57 class.

There, I was (as one might expect) greeted by trenches of all varieties, and an extraordinarily patient Outerwear Specialist named Lisa, who allowed me to try on every single khaki or honey colored trench (among my only requisites) in stock in my size...despite the fact that I was wearing cropped Lululemon leggings and an Old Navy fleece hoodie for the occasion.

And while I almost caved on an uber-classic style, at the very last moment, I spotted the Leather Strap Trench Coat (seen above) out of the corner of my eye. As soon as I put it on, I knew - THIS was the trench for me. It's classic, but with just enough edge to allow me to still feel like myself. As Edith Piaf so sagely sang (cc Felicia Sullivan), Je Ne Regrette Rien (that's I Regret Nothing, for the non-francophiles among us.)

Head to toe, here's how I wore my latest acquisition in today's dreary, WINDY New York weather:

OOTD: Mining My Closet for Chloe

Chalk it up to the change in seasion, but I'm finding my wardrobe truly lacking lately. I look at the above photo of myself (snapped by the scarf-loving Felicia Sullivan) and I just SIGH. But the Chloe Mary Janes on my feet are worthy of a spotlight, regardless of how blah I feel otherwise.

Snagged on eBay a couple of years ago (they're now several seasons old) these babies are TALL, with a sturdy 3.5 inch stacked heel and a built in platform that easily adds close to an inch to the heel height.  They're actually INSANELY walkable, which is a must for me these days.  After all, I am a woman with places to GO and people to SEE.
