New York Fashion Week: Marchesa Spring/Summer 2013

Marchesa designer, Georgina Chapman and co-founder, Keren Craig presented their Spring 2013 collection yesterday at the historical Vanderbilt Hall at Grand Central Terminal during New York Fashion Week. Drawing from the spirit of India in the 1960s, highlighted by the Beatles’ experience with the Maharishi, Marchesa’s Spring/Summer 2013 collection was composed of brightly colored paisleys and brocades of rich fabrics and intricate beadwork.

Bold garnets, fuchsias, teals, corals and Indian pink paraded across the runway exposing delicate hand embroidery and lace underlays. The Indian inspired collection featured flowing dresses adorned with jeweled embellishments and paired with gladiator sandals and kitten heels, a nod to the iconic styles of the sixties. Using traditional Indian techniques, silhouettes are embellished with pearls, crystals, gold leaf detailing and delicate silk fringe cascades. Each gown is immersed in elegantly draped sari weaves and lace over pleated tulle.

New York Fashion Week Beauty: NARS for Joy Cioci

NARS, led by International Lead Makeup Stylist Uzo, created the look for yesterday's Joy Cioci Spring '13 New York Fashion Week runway show. “The look is ‘mermaid meets the 1920s.’ Part vintage. Part fantasy," said Uzo. "Eyes are bathed in shades of shimmering ocean blue. Cheeks are glistening in silvery pearl. The  lips and its' cupid bow are dramatized in soft pink.”

New York Fashion Week Beauty: NARS for Helmut Lang

NARS created the look for the Spring '13 Helmut Lang runway show on Friday night. Lead artist Hannah Murray created a look focused on fresh skin and lived-in makeup.

DESIGNER INSPIRATION : “Juergen Teller's images of Annie Morton came to mind,” said Michael and Nicole Colovos, the husband and wife designing team behind the label. “An off-duty ‘90s girl on a Sunday morning with slept-in, smudged eyes and scrubbed polished skin - a cool, effortless beauty.”

LOOK: “The clothes had a lightness to them with lots of color and print and layering so we wanted to toughen the girls up a little but do it in a fresh, believable way," said Murray. "The focus is really on the skin, which is fresh, sporty and scrubbed clean."

Runway Redux: Yigal Azrouel Fall 2010

For Fall/Winter 2010, Yigal Azrouël presented a collection strong on tailoring. Silhouettes were lean and architectural, with undertones of reconstruction. Hybrids of different garments and fabrications creates new silhouettes and pseudo layers. This is most relevant in the jackets with resin leather sleeves and the subtle patchwork details seen throughout.

Fully matched suits offer toughness with removable shearling cuffs, leather inserts and metal accents. The masculine/feminine play works its way into the men’s and women’s collections equally. High-neck details emphasize a certain restraint yet offer softness in their drape and asymmetry.

Preferring a streamlined look, texture is created from the self-fabric with technical intricacy. Spontaneous bursts of color come in rouge, pansy and butterscotch, lightening the mood. Azrouël also designed several looks for Swarovski, integrating the crystal elements with unexpected garments like a rough, distressed leather jacket and raw drape knit.

Runway Redux: Elise Overland Fall 2010

Saturday evening, I hit Exit Art for the Fall 2010 Elise Overland show.  Seated front row were beauties Heidi Klum, Maggie Rizer and Kelly Osbourne (who looked amazing, in case you were wondering - evidence below) though ultimately, the collection stole the show.

Overland calls a video of open heart surgery as her inspiration for the season, saying “I got inspired by the lushes layers of texture and rich glossy colors of the heart.”

This modern collection, comprised of silks, velvets, shearlings and leathers with substance and power, had a distinctly rock n’ roll, yet sophisticated and chic aesthetic.
