Backstage Beauty #NYFW Fall '13: NARS for Thakoon

For yesterday's Thakoon Fall 2013 show, makeup artist Diane Kendal for NARS Cosmetics created the face.

"Thakoon's winter collection is inspired by summer," said Kendal. "So it was a combination of rich fabrics with short-sleeved dresses and heavy stoles with dragonflies. We wanted to reflect that in the makeup, so we did a very dark midnight blue shadow, but to get that summer feel we added glitter on top. It created the perfect juxtaposition between winter and summer."

Backstage Beauty #NYFW Fall '13: Jouer for Kate Spade

For this morning's Kate Spade Fall '13 Presentation, makeup artist Neil Scibelli for Jouer created a look inspired by Kate Spade’s hometown, New York City, during the ‘70s when Andy Warhol’s Factory and Studio 54 epitomized “party glamour.”

The classic cat eye and red lip complement the collection’s vivid color palette of NYC Citron, Empire Beige, Asphalt, Maraschino, Shocking Pink and Disco Purple. In Scibelli's words:

"To begin, I used Jouer Matte Moisture Tint to create a clean and matte base for the skin, using Jouer Age-Repairing Concealer where needed. I left the brows clean and groomed. For the eyes I used Jouer Powder Eyeshadow in Crème as an all over base, applying Jouer Powder Eyeshadow in Amaretto in the crease. I thickly lined the eyes with Jouer Liquid Shimmer Liner in Panther, extending and winging out. I finished with Jouer Everyday Classic Wear Mascara. I applied Jouer Tint in Honeysuckle on the apples of cheeks, blending outwards for a subtle pop of color. To finish the look I used a beautiful true red lip, Jouer’s Hydrating Lipstick in Simone, topped with Essential Lip Enhancer for extra shine.”

Backstage Beauty #NYFW Fall '13: Hourglass for La Perla

Makeup artist Moani Lee for Hourglass created the looks seen at last night's La Perla Fall 2013 presentation. La Perla designer Giovanni Bianchi looked to Spain for inspiration, specifically the moody color palette of painter Francisco Goya, and the embellished livery of bullfighters.

“I wanted to capture the sensuality and the strength of the woman wearing this decadent lingerie,” says Lee, who focused on elegant brows, radiant skin and dramatic lips worthy of an Almodóvar heroine.

For La Perla’s Black Label collection, which referenced mysterious themes including erotic art and surrealism, Lee switched the focus from the lips to the eyes. “The second look is a fresh take on the classic smoky eye, featuring a blend of black and brown kohl liner,” she says. “There are no harsh lines, it’s a softer interpretation that showcases beautiful, almond-shaped eyes.”

The nude color on lips is a preview of Hourglass Femme Nude Lip Stylo, a collection of sophisticated neutral lipsticks to be released in the fall. Lee took a mixmaster approach to makeup: To imbue skin with a multi-dimensional luminescence, she combined three different shades of Hourglass foundation, concealer, and finishing powder. As for the scene-stealing scarlet lip, she blended two shades of Hourglass Femme Rouge Velvet Crème Lipstick. “It was one part Icon and three parts Raven,” she says. “The mixture of blue red and orange red makes for an opulent and regal fall statement that even Goya himself might have appreciated.”

New York Fashion Week Beauty: NARS for Joy Cioci

NARS, led by International Lead Makeup Stylist Uzo, created the look for yesterday's Joy Cioci Spring '13 New York Fashion Week runway show. “The look is ‘mermaid meets the 1920s.’ Part vintage. Part fantasy," said Uzo. "Eyes are bathed in shades of shimmering ocean blue. Cheeks are glistening in silvery pearl. The  lips and its' cupid bow are dramatized in soft pink.”

New York Fashion Week Beauty: NARS for Timo Weiland

NARS created the look for yesterday's Timo Weiland Spring '13 runway show at New York Fashion Week. NARS Global Director of Artistry James Boehmer focused on strong brows and matte skin, saying "We wanted to play up the colors in the collection without matching too much. So we chose varying tones of blue to line the girls’ eyes with. The brows are extremely strong and graphic and skin is matte. A glossy textured lip balances the look.”

The Little Black Dress of Eye Shadow: NARS Alahambra

The little black dress (LBD, natch) is sort of...fashion's equilibrium. It's entirely timeless, inevitably available in a silhouette that's appropriate for every woman in the free world and generally speaking, if you don't have one in your closet, you're left at a loss on what to wear at least once per month. Though it is clearly not a dress, I feel similiarly towards NARS' Alahambra Duo Eyeshadow.

This uber-pigmented (and soft!) diptych of color includes universally flattering shades of rose gold and a golden champagne. Both brighten the eyes immeasurably, and provide THE perfect foil to a bold lip (generally, my makeup look of choice).  Try using the brand's Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base ($29) to anchor Alahambra, and you'll see that glow last allllll day.

If you're in the market for the Little Black Dress of makeup, visit NARS to purchase ($39).

Summer Makeup: Minimal Effort, Maximum Impact

Memorial Day is coming to a close, and it's got me thinking incessantly about the beauty of summer. I don't know about you, but I can't WAIT to soak up the sun in Montauk, to ride the Cyclone at Coney Island, to picnic during Philharmonic in the Park, to eat my way through one of New York's many street festivals, etc. etc.

But just as the seasonal transition impacts the clothing we wear, it necessitates a major change in makeup as well. And after thinking long and hard for approximately 3 seconds, I've landed on my mantra for the season, namely: Minimal Effort, Maximum Impact.

I start first with a strong foundation - or in this case, Urban Decay's new Urban Defense Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20, which came highly recommended by the lovely Kristin from Fashion Style Beauty (and bless her for it). This lightly tinted moisturizer provides *just* enough cover, and protects my precious skin from the hellish death rays of the sun.

Next up (a step I only WISH I could skip) is Make Up For Ever's amaze Full Cover Concealer. If we're being candid, I give thanks EVERYDAY that I'm a woman and it's socially acceptable for me to wear concealer, and this is among the BEST. The full coverage formula is waterproof and sweatproof - in fact, today it lasted through a HELLISH Physique 57 class without a crease.

Next and NEVER to be forgotten is a strong bronzer. My latest love is the latest from MAC's oh-so-seasonally-approp Surf, Baby! collection, which delivers a natural looking glow SLASH nothing short of LIFE to my face.

As a Leo, I eat compliments for dinner, and one of my favorite recent comps was def "Are those your REAL lashes?" This, you see, meant that I'd done my job effectively as a woman for the day. My secret (no longer) is Dior's iconic Diorshow Mascara, and in the summer, the waterproof formula keeps me lashlicious in the surf.

Last, but never least is a spectacular bold lippie - nothing will make your face look "finished' faster. New to my makeup bag is Cover Girl's ultra-moisturizing Lip Perfection Lipstick. With 44 shades to choose from, you're BOUND to find one that you love, but my favorites for the season are easily Hot (a bright orange red) and Coquette (a bold, look-at-me pink). Best of all, these babies smell like cotton candy - one of my fave summer treats, be it at the boardwalk or the ball game.

So, there you have it, peeps - my min effort, max impact makeup routine. Which begs the question, what's in your makeup bag this season?

TK: M·A·C Partners with Wonder Woman

After evaluating my wardrobe, I've come to the conclusion that Wonder Woman has been a major influence on my style. No...wait...just listen. From my love of blue and red (paired together - that's key) to my adoration of large cuffs, the DC Comics superhero epitomizes power, strength and style.

So, imagine my excitement as I perused Women's Wear Daily today, and spotted the news that M·A·C has partnered with DC Comics to create a limited edition (of course!) color cosmetics collection featuring the illustrated superhero.

"Set for a spring 2011 launch at all MAC locations worldwide, the lineup is expected to include lipsticks, eye shadows, blush and nail polish ranging in price from $13 to $49.50. (No word on whether metal-deflecting bracelets are part of the collection.)"

Will you be lining up at your counter for Wonder Woman-insprired beauty?

It's Famous & It's On My Face: M.A.C. Stereo Rose Mineralized Skinfinish Powder

There are only a few products deemed holy grail by makeup devotees, and among them is M.A.C.'s legendary Stereo Rose Mineralized Skinfinish Powder. Released years ago as a limited edition in the Goldplay collection, I've since seen Stereo Rose sell for hundreds of dollars on eBay (retail is $28, for the record) and know makeup lovers who have multiples stockpiled. I wasn't so lucky and lived life Stereo Rose-less until yesterday.

Today, I'm a new woman. This multi-use coral and gold powder functions as a highlighter or blush, and delivers an effusive, from-within kind of glow that simply cannot be matched. Stereo Rose adds a certain swagger to my look, a healthy and sexy golden-inflused flush.

Thankfully, stockpiling is no longer necessary, as Stereo Rose is being re-released in M.A.C.'s upcoming In The Groove collection, hitting counters July 8. Mark your calendars now; get your mouse finger ready and your game face on.

What's in HER Bag? Karen Robinovitz of Purple Lab

Purple Lab creatrix, author, writer, marketing genius and gal about town Karen Robinovitz wears many hats (literally...she does love a little Eugenia Kim in her life...and figuratively) but perhaps the most memorable is that of fashionista.

Among New York media, beauty and fashion types, Karen's epic style, including perfect lush curls and the highest heels imaginable, is the thing legends are made of. So, when she volunteered to give me a peek inside her splurge bag of the season, a Celine shopper, I nearly shouted "Yes!" from the rooftops my office.

In her own words, here's what Karen's toting around this season:

  • Croc embossed monogrammed notebook, a gift from a friend and so chic!
  • Purple Lab's Huge Lips Skinny Hips in Worship Kate and Kitty Poledancer. They're great mixed together.
  • Purple Lab's Luvah Lip Stain and Gloss in Mama's Boy, the perfect nude. Full of dong quai so it's great when I need to bring sexy back.
  • Purple Lab's Cheek Implants Cream Blush with collagen in Backstage Pass, a ripe peach shade, for when my cheek bones need some love.
  • Bliss hand cream
  • Purple Sharpie pen and Pilot rollerball pen. My two faves.
  • Chrome Hearts sunglasses - obsessed with the silver details on the arms. Rocker sophisication!
  • Blackberry, which may as well be surgically attached to me. Homescreen image is the McQueen armadillo shoe, an homage to the late designer.
  • Silver Chanel biz card holder with cards, of course
  • Tazo passion flavor tea and kal stevia which I throw in my Organic Avenue Sigg to flavor up water all day long. Otherwise, I probably won't drink any.
  • WWD, the bible and reminder of my first job out of school
  • Dried mango. Perfect snack on the go.
  • Purple Louis Vuitton wallet, a holiday gift from my husband. Purple is my favorite color.
  • Keys on a Chrome Hearts keychain which was my husband's but somehow became mine
  • Ouchless Goody rubber band for hair 911s

For the Love of Color: Make Up For Ever

Are you familiar with Make Up For Ever? No? Then march yourself down to your nearest Sephora and whip out your credit card – your makeup routine is about to get really, really fun, and you’re about to get really, really gorgeous.

Innovative, versatile, portable, creative, imaginative…these are all attributes of Make Up For Ever’s exciting new ranges, namely, their HD line.  Based on the notion that makeup displayed in High Definition can look fake and heavy, HD products strive to provide you with flawless coverage, naturally.  The look starts with HD Primer, which is brilliantly tinted to gently cover skin flaws like redness (green tint), blueness/veins (yellow tint), sallowness (pink tint), and dullness (shimmer).  Perfect for any skin color and type, the Primers subtly correct before applying foundation.  I selected green tint; and have been using it daily on and around my nose, over sheer Illamasqua primer, to even out my natural redness.  Truly, it works like a dream – and feels absolutely delicious on my skin. A little will go a very long way (note: a generous bottle is approximately $35 – not a bad deal), and your skin will thank you for it!  Additionally – I haven’t touched concealer since beginning using the Primer.

$30.00 by Make Up For Ever at Sephora

The next step is the wondrous HD Foundation ($40), with it’s light, sheer feel and flawless coverage.  Among an exceptional range of colors, anyone can find their perfect match – just be sure to apply it with short, quick strokes, using a foundation brush.  As I was unwilling to completely abandon my much-loved Bare Minerals powder foundation, I quickly found that it complements the HD Foundation, as a fantastic finishing powder.

To give your cheeks some extra love, spring for the HD Blush, a light, silky crème blush with colors as diverse as the Foundation.  #13 was my favorite: a delicate baby pink, reminiscent of Cargo’s Catalina blush, perfect for a fresh Spring/Summer glow.  Easy to build, you can gently adjust the intensity of  HD Blush color by applying it in easily blended layers.

…and the final innovation from Make Up For Ever?  Ingenious drops of heaven called Flash Color, that may be the most perfect cosmetic product ever invented.  Talk about variety – every color in the rainbow is represented here, and at only $15 apiece, anyone can afford their very own spectrum of creativity, versatility, and self-expression.  Aqua Crème are little pots of silicone-based mineral pigment crème; they’re waterproof, won’t smudge or feather, and are ridiculously easy to apply, correct, and remove.  Like their HD siblings, it’s easy to build and layer color – start sheer, go bold; or blend shades for a custom look.  Use on any part of the face for long-lasting satin color; even use as face/body paint!  Aqua Crème also firmly holds decorative powders, like Make Up Forever’s new Diamond Powder, beautifully. Feeling extra-adventurous?  Try the brand's whimsical false eyelashes – crazy neon colors, patterns, and textures; all sold as individual kits, with adhesive.

Win This: Sue Devitt Triple Touch Light Reflecting Bronzer

Truth be told, I'm bronzer-handicapped. But after years of testing products that were too orange, too gold or too glittery, I've finally found one that's JUST RIGHT (call me Goldilocks!)  So, what's my secret?  It's Sue Devitt's Triple Touch Light Reflecting Bronzer.

This sleek silver palette houses a myriad of bronze shades from light to dark - simply blend with a large fluffy brush to find your perfect hue and apply to the apples of your cheeks, the bridge of your nose, your hairline and anywhere else that the sun might naturally hit.  It also works just as beautifully as a eye shadow palette and by now, I think you KNOW how I feel about multi-taskers (if not, let me reiterate that I LOVE THEM.)

Since I dig this bronzer more than words can say, I've partnered with the team at Sue Devitt for a giveaway. If you'd like to be bronzed and beautiful this Spring, simply leave a comment telling me what beauty product you simply can't live without. And while you're at it, visit the Sue Devitt Facebook Page and follow Sue Devitt on Twitter for some fab beauty tips!

Three winners will be chosen at random next Thursday, March 25 at 11PM EST to receive their very own Triple Touch Light Reflecting Bronzer.

Get the Look: Mary Louise Parker at the 2009 Emmy Awards

Maybelline isn't just hitting the runways at Bryant Park this year, they're also tackling the red carpet. Makeup Artist Tina Turnbow for Maybelline New York created the face for nominee Mary Louise Parker tonight at the 2009 Emmy Awards.

Tina was inspired by the deep purple and indigo tones in Mary-Louise’s Zac Posen dress, and her gorgeous gunmetal grey accessories. To play up the colors, Tina chose a dramatic yet classic smokey eye, blushing pink cheeks and nude lips.

Face: Because Mary-Louise has beautiful porcelain skin, Tina kept her face looking pristine by applying Maybelline New York Dream Liquid Mousse in Classic Ivory – with touches of Maybelline New York Dream Mousse Concealer in Light under the eyes and to the tops of the cheeks to give a contoured look.

Cheeks: To complement her ivory skin, Tina brushed on Maybelline New York Mineral Power Naturally Luminous Blush in Gentle Pink to the apples of the cheeks to give the look of a soft natural flush.

Eyes: Tina used all four shades in the Maybelline New York Expert Wear Stylish Smokes Palette in Amethyst Smokes to play up her eyes and add drama; the deep purples complemented her creamy skin and dark hair.

She then followed with Maybelline New York Line Stiletto Liquid Eyeliner in Black on the upper and lower lash lines. To showcase the gorgeous jewel tones of the shadows, Tina only applied one coat of Maybelline New York Pulse Perfection Vibrating Mascara in Very Black.

Lips: For a barely-there, neutral lip, Tina lined the entire mouth with Maybelline New York Color Sensational Lip Liner in Toast. She then followed up with Maybelline New York Color Sensational Lipstick in Nearly There.

Body: To complete the look, a soft dusting of Maybelline New York Mineral Power Illuminator in Nude was brushed along her collar bones, arms and legs for the perfect red carpet glow.

Are you digging the smokey eye and nude lip seen on Mary Louise Parker tonight?
