New York Fashion Week Beauty: TRESemmé for Tracy Reese

TRESemmé Stylist Jeanie Syfu created a tousled bedhead style with a faux undercut effect for the Tracy Reese Spring 2013 show - a surprisingly edgy look that was inspired by Rihanna’s 80’s-inspired textured undercut.
To recreate this look, full of attitude and texture, follow these tips from TRESemmé Stylist Jeanie Syfu:
  • Enhance your natural texture with TRESemmé 24 Hour Body Blow Dry Lotion and power dry with fingers for a loose wavy finish.  Once dry, lightly brush through hair with a paddle brush to soften the product.
  • Next, create a deep side part continuing diagonally back to the nape of the opposite side.  Clip hair to section away.
  • Using TRESemmé Mega Firm Control Gel, create a tight cornrow braid with the lower section of the hair starting behind the ear, working diagonally to the nape, and fasten with an elastic.
  • Release the top section of hair and spray TRESemmé Fresh Start Volumizing Dry Shampoo throughout for matte texture.
  • Apply TRESemmé Mega Firm Control Gel with fingers through the front hairline, leaving the rest of the hair matte, soft and loose.  Set hair with pin curl clips around the hairline and diffuse with a blow dryer on high heat for height and body.
  • Spray with TRESemmé 24 Hour Body Finishing Spray and release clips when gel has dried. Toss hair over one shoulder for an 80's-inspired textured undercut.

Beach Style with Alisha Trimble

Summer is a season that, as woman, I simultaneously long for yet also dread. Steamy temps mean smaller outfits and as much as I love beach time, each year I stress about finding a beach style that's still me.

This season's take, seen above, is retro with a glam goth twist thanks to designer Alisha Trimble, whose creative mind created the retro style halter maillot style seen above. This impeccably constructed suit is embellished with a gloriously sequined skull. See more of Alisha Trimble's vintage-style swimswear online - the fully amazing details will win you over in a snap.

Complementing the swimsuit is a sweetly protective Hat Attack Fedora with Neon Trim and a cheery pedicure (the finishing touch for any summer look, in my book!)

Hair Obsession Brewing: John Barrett Salon's Braid Bar

As a Leo, my obsession with my MANE runs deep. To reiterate that point (and perhaps I shouldn't admit this), there are days that I LITERALLY look in the mirror and wonder, "Is my hair shiny ENOUGH?" or "Is my hair BROWN enough?" Yes, friends, it's Deep Thought Central over here. But I digress.

Today, I hit the It Gets Better Lounge at the Empire Hotel (Chuck Bass, where are you?), where luxe New York staple the John Barrett Salon (familiar with the term "Bergdorf blondes?" Blame John Barrett) had set up shop, delivering deliciously chic braids to lucky attendees of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.

Stylist Halli helped me choose the perfect style for MOI, from a book chock full of choices. Apparently, the Milkmaid braid I chose works particularly well on gals with distinct bangs - it acts as a headband, visually framing the face.

As you can imagine, I'm beyond OBSESSED wtih my hairz, and keep admiring myself in all available mirrors, windows, doors and the like. If you'd like to experience John Barrett's Braid Bar, you can learn more or book an appointment online here.

Do's range from $45-$65 (cheaper than a blowout!), and last most gals 2-3 days.

My Josie Natori Moment

I love nothing more than a designer that lives their own design philosophy and I can think of no one that epitomizes that more than the graceful and elegant Josie Natori.

An accomplished business woman and concert pianist (!) prior to launching her fashion career, Josie is of course best known as the creator of her eponymous line of ready to wear, home goods and decadent lingerie and sleepwear.

But Josie has more design up her sleeves and to fete the launch of her latest collection, Natori Essentials, I was invited to her stunning Upper East Side apartment (HELLO, REAL ESTATE ENVY!) last week.

Over decadent champagne and delicious dim sum, Josie herself walked an intimate group of online editors through the line and I found myself dying over the sleek, chic and eminently wearable separates (primarily in black). In particular, the voluminous cocoon cardigan as well as a yummy stretch lace pencil skirt (va-va-va-voom!) spoke to me.

The biggest treat of the evening (okay, second only to a private piano performance) was definitely a visit to Josie's closet. The size of most New York bedrooms and organized beyond belief, it was most striking due to her clearly defined style choices.

Lined with black separates and dresses (seriously, there was not another color in sight!), it's clear that Josie expresses herself through the enormous assortment of bold solid and printed scarves scarves, bejeweled shoes of varying heights and structured bags in a myriad of skins and hues. While I still need a bit more variety in my own closet, I found the simplicity inspiring!

To experience Natori Essentials, take a jaunt through the gallery below.

Observed: The London Look

When people talk about stylish cities, London frequently ranks pretty high on the list, so I've been paying close attention to the street style here.

A few trends definitely seem to be part of the London look for practical reasons. i.e. The city is pretty brisk for most of the year, so tights in myriad patterns, colors and weights are definitely part of the style lexicon.

Sweaters (also known as "jumpers") are also a layering must - be it a vintage (oh yeah - and vintage abounds too!) pullover with a heavy dose of irony or the new "coatigan" - that's a cross between a coat and a long cardigan.

London, of course, is a walking city, so the footwear here is inexplicably much more practical than New York (inexplicable because the latter is also a walking city - but perhaps its women are more willing to suffer?) - flat boots and booties abound, as do low heeled and quirky pumps, mary janes and oxfords.

It's often said that trends start here in the UK, and if there's any truth to that, I think we'll be seeing even more capes next fall. I've spotted a few amazing ones on stylish Londonites - and they're available at every price point in stores, from high street (i.e. Marks & Spencer) to Harrod's.

What's the most stylish city you've ever visited? Tell me about it in the comments!

Get the Look: Jessica Szohr's Fashion & Beauty Faves

Like any good New York woman, I la-la-love Gossip Girl. And while I can't survive without a little S and B on my Monday nights, I'm also a huge fan of Brooklynite Vanessa Abrams, played by Jessica Szohr.  Jessica's really a natural knock out, so when the folks at Dove shared the following fashion & beauty must-haves from their spokesperson, I knew I had to share.

  • Growing up in Wisconsin, jeans were my wardrobe staple. This summer I’m living in jean shorts because I can wear them so many different ways. I can either wear them casually with a button down and sandals during the day or dress them up with heels at night.
  • The stylists I’ve worked with have really opened my eyes to fashion trends and experimenting with accessories. This summer boho headbands are my go-to accessory because they keep my hair off my face when it gets sticky out
  • People don’t realize this, but we are filming the show all summer long in NYC. To help relieve the hot city heat, I’m constantly jumping in the shower to freshen up and stay cool. I love Dove go fresh Burst Body Wash. The nectarine and white ginger scent smells so good and invigorates me at any time of day! (Jessica's not exaggerating - this is one of my very fave shower gels. It's moisturizing too - and SO cheap.)
  • Filming days can be long and brutal – especially in the heat of summer – so I make sure to stay hydrated and have lots of healthy snacks to keep my energy level up. But don’t get me wrong, I definitely stray sometimes – my favorite splurge is Cheetos!
  • On a warm summer day, no need to cake on the makeup! I like to keep it simple. One of my favs is Napoleon Perdis mascara – it’s all I need in the summer!
