On My Radar: Alexander McQueen & Damien Hirst Scarf Collaboration

By this point, Alexander McQueen's skull scarves are a classic and this year just so happens to mark the 10th anniversary of their debut. In celebration, the brand's collaborated with artist Damien Hirst on 30 unique designs that play to the shared aesthetic vision of the artist and the designer - think strong references to the natural world and playful symmetry.

Each of the 30 designs is adapted from Hirst’s Entomology series; you'll see that both beauties and creepy crawlies (butterflies, bugs, spiders and other insects) have been worked into each scarf's pattern to form kaleidoscopic geometric shapes, laid out to create the signature McQueen skull motif.

The Damien Hirst Scarf Collection is available exclusively at Alexander McQueen boutiques and online, with prices ranging from $515 to $1,175 - click here to explore.

In My Cart: Matches Edition

Girls of a Certain Age, the new-ish blog from former Lucky EIC Kim France, is admittedly one of my favorite sites on the World Wide Web at the moment. One of the funniest, yet most inspiring, recurring features is the "I Can Shop Anywhere Challenge," in which Kim finds items she'd actually wear in the most unexpected of places, i.e. the fashion wasteland that is the FINGERHUT catalog. Admittedly, I'm not so into self-sacrifice (better Kim than I), so for the first in a new "In My Cart,' series, I instead devoted my energies to the carefully edited designer assortment at Matches Fashion, home to men's and women's apparel, along with a bounty of gorge accessories.

If given an unlimited budget, here's my top five:

While all wishes, dreams and desires expressed are my own, this post was produced in association with Matches Fashion.

Link Love: Tuesday Edition

It's procrastination central over at my desk today, y'all. Here are my fave blog links of the week, what keeping me in the know, entertained, etc:

Amber at Beauty Blogging Junkie gives me an epic case of the WANTZ with her glorious review of the new Tom Ford Neroli Portofino collection (above). I need that Body Scrub and Bath Oil like I need air, water and a French bulldog, peeps.

Marina over at Makeup Loves Me gets down with the new, utterly gorgeous Jo Malone Decorated Home Candles by David Hicks. Suffice it to say, they've got me all lit up as well.

Jet Set Girl Anne (whose hair sends me into a blind, jealousy-induced rage, for the record) reviews Water for Elephants, and HEY, guess who attended the world premiere with her on Sunday night, courtesy of Dove? Oh, right, me (and the aforementioned Amber). Stay tuned for deets this week and satiate yourself with her post here.

Wendy at nitro:licious got a sneak peek at the latest Alexander McQueen collab with Puma, and there's MINK involved. Get the scoop here.

Sarah at Style It Online has the cajones to wear a JUMPSUIT, and I admire her for it. From afar, of course. I don't want to get TOO close to a jumpsuit.

What are you reading these day, homies?

OOTD: Dreary Day, Cheery Shoe

While I don't subscribe to MANY style rules, there are one or two that I hold dear. Most notably, I love a little contrast and despise anything too matchy-matchy.

But today, I broke my own rule (yes, I am a rule-breaker, it's true). After all, there's nothing like a bright, cheery pop of color to temper a chilly, windy, dreary, drizzly, gray New York day like today. So, I chose to embrace a little - or more specifically - a lot of red, namely my beloved Charles Jourdan Andes platform pump, a cherry red patent leather Alexander McQueen wrap bracelet and, of course, MAC So Chaud lipstick, a favorite orange-y red for Spring.

Head to toe, here's what else I'm wearing:

How do you perk up your rainy day looks? Do tell.

The Fashion Bucket List: Alexander McQueen Disco Skull Clutch

While I rarely carry a clutch (I prefer to be prepared for any and all occasions, and that requires a wide variety of items, on my person, at all times), I'm actually a collector. I have between 20-30 (vintage and contemporary), including several from one of my fave clutch purveyors, metal mesh experts Whiting & Davis.

But the mack daddy of all clutches is, without a doubt, this staggeringly gorgeous Disco Skull Clutch from Alexander McQueen.  Adorned with two of my favorite things - multi-color crystal Swarovski studs and a skull clasp, THIS is the clutch that will stop traffic and incite an epidemic of envy in any stylish room.

Best of all, McQueen's box clutches are deceptively roomy; they can easily hold all of the essentials for a great night out - iPhone, lipstick, compact, Blister Block, money clip, and more.

The Disco Skull Clutch is a mere (yes, I use the word ironically) $2,215, so I'm currently evaluating my closets, cupboards and cats to see what I can sell on eBay to raise the funds. If you, on the other hand, have a wealth of disposable income, you can snag your own at www.alexandermcqueen.com.

Quote of the Day: Alexander McQueen

"Clothes and jewellery should be startling, individual. When you see a woman in my clothes, you want to know more about them. To me, that is what distinguishes good designers from bad designers."

Alexander McQueen

Alexander McQueen, 1969-2010

It was clear that a dark cloud had settled on the first day of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York when news broke this morning of Alexander McQueen's (born Lee McQueen) suicide in London.

Just 40, McQueen was widely regarded as one of the most influential and artistic designers in fashion. The rare editor's darling and commercial success, he counted Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Sandra Bullock, Sarah Jessica Parker and so many more as devotees.

There's nothing that I can say that another, more articulate voice hasn't already said (i.e. Cathy Horyn's The Loss of Alexander McQueen), but this is a death that I find just devastating.

In his memory, here's my favorite McQueen moment, the state of the art Kate Moss hologram that closed his Fall 2006 show - it epitomized both his love of art and his ability to embrace technology.

Viktor & Rolf for Samsonite Black Label

Of all the brands that have attempted designer collaborations, Samsonite Black Label is one of the VERY few that gets it right in my opinion.

Following in the footsteps of Brit designer Alexander McQueen (who incorporated an edgy skeletal design and mock croc), the quirky Dutch design duo Viktor & Rolf (above) has designed a capsule collection of luggage themed "Happy Travels," which launched exclusively at Colette earlier this month. The travel bags are available in classic black with patent trim or a vintage-inspired aeroplane print in red or navy.

Though I already have a carry-on from the McQueen collection, I may need to save my pennies for a full sized suitcase from the Viktor & Rolf for Samsonite Black Label collection. If you're interest is piqued, see or shop the full collection here until March 15.

Trend Alert: Neon for Spring

Queen of Hearts with Alexander McQueen

I'm not sure if I'm up to the challenge of 5 inch heels but McQueen's black patent leather pumps are simply begging to be worn this Valentine's Day, thanks to the heart-shaped peep-toe and neon pink sole.
