Win It! $250 to DSW

How to Style a Jeweled Sandal

Summer's just around the corner and, in anticipation, I spent hours yesterday cleaning out my closet. It's always fun to be reminded of what out-of-season goodies were tucked away, and I now have clarity on exactly what I need to round out my wardrobe for the season. Always on the list are SHOES, and in particular, fresh sandals for warm weather (maybe the chic jeweled version from Giuseppe Zanotti above, for one)- I'm sure you can relate. If you're in the market, I've got good news for you - I've partnered with DSW to offer one lucky reader a $250 DSW Bonus Card! Here's how to enter:

Italian Sunshine & Sex Appeal: Dolce&Gabbana Dolce

Like many cultures, but perhaps even more so, Italians take pride in the many things that they do well, and even best. Included in the list? Food, fashion, the art of seduction - three crucial elements to what my people call la dolce vita (the sweet life, that is).

Fragrance is a large part of seduction, of course, and it's only appropriate that Italian design masters Dolce & Gabbana's newest scent Dolce makes that ask very easy. This overtly feminine floral presents a fresh mix of white flowers - my favorite - including Water Lily, Daffodil and the noble White Amaryllis, a rare and quite particular South African flower used for the first time ever in a fragrance.

To me, Dolce is best defined as both sweetness and danger, with curves ahead - it evokes the warm, sexy sunshine of Italy, along with sirens like Sophia Loren or Monica Bellucci.

Dolce&Gabbana Dolce is available at luxury department stores nationwide or Sephora. Bottles range from $70-$112.

While all opinions are, as always, my own, this post was produced in partnership with Dolce & Gabbana and Refinery29.

New Year, New You (a Skintervention)

As discussed often on this blog (almost ad nauseum, if we’re being honest), taking care of your skin is one of the most important commitments you can make in your beauty regimen.

And beyond the basics – eating well, staying well hydrated, getting enough sleep, eschewing the sun and cigarettes – there’s also the magic that is great skincare. Below, three easy peasy (yet highly impactful) resolutions you can make now (it’s not too late!) to improve the condition of your skin in 2014.

  • Always cleanse. No excuses. No exceptions. Your skin is a living, breathing part of you and falling asleep in your makeup is an absolute skin sin. I start first with a makeup wipe to remove foundation and then cleanse with Pur Minerals Simplicity Soothing Gentle Cleanser – I have truly sensitive skin that needs to be babied, and this relaxed formula is the perfect, never-irritating solution.
  • Mask like a Parisian.  The French do it better, y’all – that’s an adage I really believe, particularly when it comes to beauty and style decisions. So, mask like a Parisian – read, generously. A cult favorite like Borghese Fango Active Face and Body Mud Mask twice a week works wonders to unclog pores and remove lingering impurities from skin.
  • SPF is your best friend.  No, really, repeat after me – SPF is your best friend. Now, don’t get me wrong, I LOOOOOOVE a tan. I’m Italian. I find a tan impossibly glamorous. But the reality is that there’s absolutely nothing worse you can do for your skin than lie in the sun. Apply SPF every day – perhaps H20 Plus Face Oasis Hydrating Lotion with SPF 30, even in the winter, yes, even when it’s cloudy.

Lastly, this year, don’t forget to treat your neck and décolleté as you treat your face – cleanse, apply serum and massage in moisturizer to ensure that these fragile areas don’t wind up giving away your age before your face does!

Kohl's Beauty Trade In Event: Recapped

This past weekend, I paid a VERY hospitable visit to one of my favorite (almost?) Southern cities - Nashville! There, I stopped by the Kohl's Beauty Trade In event, which invited local shoppers to swap two of their used and unloved beauty products for one very snazzy and very tempting $10 gift card valid in store.

The new Beauty Departments at Kohl's boast a staff of well-versed Beauty Advisors (who took every beauty request to heart!) as well as a bounty of prestige brands that are otherwise impossible to find in many cities across the US. Included in the mix are LORAC, Cargo Cosmetics (a couple of my holiday picks from those brands can be seen in the Insta snap above!), Borghese and my new fave, Be Delectable, a sweetly-scented collection of bath and body delights, shoppable here

The event served as a fun introduction to Kohl's brand-spankin'new Beauty Departments in over 250 stores nationwide. Find your local Kohl's via the store locator on site!

On My Radar: Holiday Party Beauty

With snowflakes falling this week in New York, it’s clear that the holiday season is almost upon us –woot! I loooove the holidays for approximately a million reasons, but most of all, I love holiday food, holiday décor and of course, festive celebrations – of which there will be many on the docket. While I look forward to celebrating the season, prepping for holiday parties can definitely add some fashion and beauty stress, to say the least.

SO, to get ahead of the curve (or more aptly, party season), I thought I’d share a few simple tips to elevate your look from everyday to holiday.

Go for the gold: A gilded manicure (to try: essie Good as Gold) or shimmering liner like this one from budget-friendly Jane Cosmetics is an easy way to add holiday sparkle without being overtly, hit ‘em over the head obvious. Subtlety…it’s a beautiful thing!

Embrace the classics: A glamorous red lip – classic for a reason - is an easy way to add panache (a word long due for a resurgence, yes?) when you’re hopping from the office to holiday cocktails in the blink of an eye. Try a lip gloss stick for ease of application on the go – I dig Dare Devil from Pur Minerals

Get dramatic: Try elevating just an element or two of your daily beauty ritual to feel party-ready. For me, that often means a smokier eye and a headier fragrance like Michael Kors Rose Gold Eau de Parfum, which I keep tucked in my desk drawer for spontaneous evening occasions.

How do you prep for holiday party season? Tell all in the comments below, and shop the goodness of Kohl’s newly revamped Beauty Department at over 250 Kohl’s stores nationwide or online, here.

1, 2, 3, Pretty: LORAC’s Little Black Palette

I'm on a quest these days to simplify. I want fewer things, and better things, and ideally, things that serve more than one purpose. Take, for example, LORAC's Little Black Palette, available at Kohl's newly revamped Beauty Department in over 250 stores nationwide (along with brands like Cargo, The Balm, essie and so many more...but I digress). This chic, well, little black palette, includes four flawless, mineral infused baked eye shadows and a mini Behind the Scenes Eye Primer designed to set the stage for pretty - and pretty that lasts.

As far as I’m concerned, this palette leaves little to be desired. With a soft golden beige, copper, rich bronze and chocolate brown shadows included, I can use it to create a simple, office-appropriate eye, a flirty take or a deeper, sexier look for pending holiday occasions. What I like most about LORAC’s Little Black Palette is, quite simply, the versatility. To take your look easily from day to night:

  • Incorporate lower lash mascara and eye liner - upper and lower lash line for a more finished look (you can even use the dark brown shadow included as a liner using a tapered eye liner brush)
  • Try applying any of the shadows wet for a more dramatic, intense look
  • Using a larger blush brush, apply the lightest, champagne shadow as an all over highlighter - it leaves a diffused glow that’s perfect for evening

You can pick up LORAC’s Little Black Palette for $34 at Kohl’s in over 250 stores nationwide, or shop the LORAC collection online here!

Fall Beauty: A Transition

The hubbub of the Spring ’14 shows has finally settled down here in New York, so it’s time to focus on the present, to LIVE in the proverbial MOMENT, if you will, peeps. As a longtime downtowner (longtime, at least, in spirit), I’ve got my fall shopping list in order and it’s full of easy, polished dresses with some edge and leather, leather, leather (if you’re so inclined, click here). With fashion assigned, it’s time to hone in on a fall beauty transition as well – I’m thinking a longer, deeper, muted nail, fuller, more dimensional hair and a navy liner and fresh mascara to make my green yes pop. Here are a few faves:

  • Black mascara is an essential, regardless of season. My current favorite is easy to find and delivers major volume, with the added bonus of dual sided brush designed to comb out clumps (I can’t be the only guilty party?), Cover Girl Clump Crusher Mascara, $8.99
  • After a summer of bright pop nails and even wilder experiments with nail art, I’m ready for a more muted, classically sexy manicure. A go-to red, Cover Girl Outlast Stay Brilliant Glosstinis Nail Polish in Sangria 515 is pure, classic, crimson magic - and it lasts for days.
  • Pantene’s new Expert Collection was created in conjunction with Olay’s anti-aging experts, and is designed to deliver fuller, thicker and thereby more GLORIOUS hair. Regardless of the shampoo and conditioner I use each morning, I’ve been incorporating the Thickening Treatment daily as a scalp treat pre-styling. If aging is a concern of yours – yes, hair ages, and it’s devastating! – snag a bottle for just $18.99.

Lady Essentials (+ a Hair DIY!): U by Kotex & Goody

The older I get, the less I want to carry – it’s a weird inverse relationship in my life. So, I’ve pared things down to the basics in my purse as of late – wallet, keys, iPhone, lipgloss, ponytail holders and, of course, lady essentials – a tamp or two, you know?

While I’m generally monogamous in my relationships, I was recently wooed by the chic little black box and colorful plastic applicators of U by Kotex – packaging is often the way to bring me over to the proverbial dark side. And at the moment, Target has a tempting little offer of FREE Goody hair elastics when you buy U by Kotex at Target – and only at Target – more proverbial bang for your buck and two purse essentials crossed off the list simultaneously. To partake, text ‘KOTEX’ to 'TARGET' (827438) for your coupon.

If you need a little inspiration beyond the basic ponytail, I whipped up a simple braided ‘do at my desk using the Goody Ouchless Elastics (no snags here, peeps). To replicate, just follow these easy peasy steps:

  • Beginning at each temple, French braid a section of hair – narrow or wide, your choice  - drawing to the back of your head and securing with a Goody elastic
  • Replicate the French braid on the other side of your temple
  • Secure the braids (optional) at the center back of your head with another elastic – something simple or a spicier textured or metallic version.
  • Voila! A simple hair upgrade in 10 minutes or less.

What to Wear: Late Summer Wedding

A wedding is generally the perfect reason to get dressed up and for some reason, even more so when the wedding falls in the late summer or early fall. When planning your look for a summer wedding in the UK, there's one thing you can be absolutely confident in - the weather will be unpredictable! If you'd rather avoid spending the day shivering in a floaty dress after you’ve woken to find the weather cool and wet, have a second outfit option ready and waiting.

That said, let's be optimistic and think best-case scenario: that the bride and groom will be bathed in sunshine on their wedding day! Bonmarche has a superb selection of special occasion outfits, with many options to coordinate items so that you can slip layers on and off as the day progresses. Weddings used to break for a pause mid-afternoon, but nowadays most guests will choose an outfit that will take them through the whole day – from the ceremony through the reception!

One of the great things about wedding photos is the amazing range of bright and colourful outfits that different guests choose to wear. It makes sense to find out the colours that the wedding party will be wearing, and then avoid them. If it hasn’t been made clear on the invitation, dont' hesitate to ask the bride herself or a member of the family.

The invitation will often give you an idea of how formal a wedding iis going to be and, of course, this will influence your choice of outfit. There are also some practicalities to bear in mind – such as making sure you wear comfortable shoes. You’ll spend most of the day and evening on your feet, and if you have to walk any distance, could you do so with ease in the shoes you have chosen? If the ceremony has a religious element to it, make sure that you have something to cover spaghetti shoulder straps, like a draped blazer (which is less formal than something with structure) or a complementary shawl.

The most important thing to bear in mind when choosing a late summer wedding outfit is that while you want to blend in with the other guests, this is one occasion where you really can choose to go to town on your outfit. Unless you’re going to a particularly formal wedding, the general guideline is that any festive style goes, so make it one that you enjoy wearing!

Change Your Hair, Change Your Life: L’Oreal Paris Advanced Haircare

These days, more than ever, I spend a lot of time thinking about my hair. After cutting my long layers into a sleek stacked bob in September (you may remember this very important moment in my life), and IMMEDIATELY REGRETTING IT (you may also remember this moment), I’m now in the fully miserable growing out stage.

In the growing out stage, it’s impossible to overstate the importance of hair health. And there are many factors at play when it comes to how hair looks and feels, be they environmental – think sun and pollutants - or lifestyle – heat styling, over-processing, poor nutrition and the like. Thankfully, new L’Oreal Paris Advanced Haircare, a collection five years in the making, is here to help.

Advanced Haircare reads fully like a prestige line of products, offering up a five-module system of shampoos, conditioners, and most importantly, hair treatments specific to each hair type – a three-step system designed to be used together, for OPTIMUM hair health, instant results and transformed hair over time.

No two heads of hair are alike - we’re all special snowflakes. SO, choose the regimen best suited to YOU for the best results:

  • Total Repair 5  Arginine –K Complex and Ceramide, best for split ends, weakness, roughness, dullness and dehydration
  • Smooth Intense Arginine-K Complex + Oleo-Keratin, for smooth, polished, frizz-free hair
  • Power Moisture Arginine-K Complex + Hyaluronic, for moisturized strands that are soft and shiny
  • Color Vibrancy Arginine-K Complex + Anti-Oxidant  + UV Filters, for color vibrancy and nourishment
  • Triple Resist Concentrated Arginine, to reinforce strands and resist hair breakage

In case you’re wondering, I’m a Color Vibrancy girl myself - always trying to buy an extra few days between salon visits. Most important to my daily routine is the Color Vibrancy Dual Protect Spray, a leave in that nourishes and conditions hair, protecting strands from heat styling and fading. I spritz on my bangs prior to flat ironing and then apply a mist in a halo of sorts as the final finishing touch.

The L’Oreal Paris Advanced Haircare collection is available now at drugstores and mass retailers nationwide. All shampoos and conditioners retail for around $4.99, while treatments specific to each module will run you about $6.99. If you have questions about YOUR hair, which product is right for you or how to treat your hair the very BEST this season, tweet your questions to @LOrealParisUSA with the hashtag #AskHairGenius – their experts are here to help, with personalized and expert hair advice.

At the end of the day, remember this - hair is your best accessory, so if you haven’t already, resolve to treat yours with kindness!

Lookmatic Love [+ a #Giveaway!]: Ten Over Six Collabs on the Ultimate Cat-Eye

It’s good to find a style signature, and one of my favorites is undoubtedly a retro cat eye frame. In my spectacle WARDROBE, I’ve got prescription beauties and sunnies from brands high to low. But no cat eye is as special as Lookmatic’s new Patti Goes to Paris cat eye ($130), designed in collaboration with Los Angeles boutique Ten Over Six.

Ten Over Six Creative Director Kristen Lee created the Patti Goes to Paris in subtle homage to rock icon Patti Smith and her recent, National Book Award winning memoir Just Kids. It’s an extraordinary read, in fact, if you haven’t read it, I suggest you close your laptop now and get moving (okay, okay, finish this blog post first.)

Source: fmr-id.com via Dina on Pinterest

Available in three colors – a mod white, pop pink and deep olive – the Patti Goes to Paris is perfectly exaggerated, yet not oversized. The olive plays particularly well on a brunette (if I do say so myself.)

But I’m curious. What’s your preferred eyewear style? To suss out the deets, I’ve partnered with Lookmatic to offer 1 lucky reader the style of their choice – eyeglasses or sunglasses, prescription or non!

To enter, explore the Lookmatic site to find your favorite style and simply leave a comment below sharing! If you need a little more inspiration, you can also check out my Styled By feature spotlighting another of my fave Lookmatic styles - the Shelby.

I’ll choose one winner at random one week from today, on Wednesday, October 10 at Noon EST.

Good luck!

Pin Your Way to NYC with PINK & ELLE!

The SoHo PINK store is one of my favorite downtown shopping destinations. Regardless of your age, it boasts killer loungewear, colorful, fun and comfy bras (this multi-way push up is a savior, but I digress), AND, on the last weekend of each month, a bling machine for free custom bedazzling on PINK gear purchases over $50 – sweet, yah?

And NOW, PINK is expanding its footprint in Manhattan, taking over a full floor in the mega-sized Herald Square Victoria’s Secret flagship in Midtown this November. To celebrate the impending re-opening, the brand is marrying two of my great loves – NYC itself, and Pinterest – and challenging fans to share their city pride and Pin their way to NYC!

Broadway?) for a chance to win a trip for two to the Big Ap, a $1,000 shopping spree in the brand spankin’ new PINK Herald Square store and a styling session with an ELLE stylist.

I’ll be kicking off my board today, but if you need a little inspiration, check out PINK’s NYC Love Pinterest board here, and see the official contest rules here*. Beauty Freebie: Lancôme’s Super Serums

Confession time, friends. A monumental birthday just passed for me, and while I was beyond excited to plan my annual bash, I’m also increasingly anxious about…aging. Aging of the face, aging of the body, aging of the hair. There’s simply no way around it, yet I refuse. It will be a battle of wills, I promise you. That’s why I have my trigger finger ready to take advantage of Lancôme’s amazing new sample offer. Register online for a chance to experience their ‘Super Serums’ – a powerful anti-aging duo, delivering younger-looking, more perfected skin (for the record, I’m in the market for both!)

What are these “Super Serums?’ you may be wondering. WELL, if you haven’t already met Lancôme Génifique Concentrate, I encourage you to get INVOLVED. Génifique is Lancôme’s award-winning activating serum targeting radiance, vibrancy and softness. Try using it day and night, on cleansed skin, prior to moisturizing - Génifique delivers visibly younger skin in just 7 days.

For truly SUPER results (see what I did there?), follow Génifique with Visionnaire , Lancôme’s award-winning correcting serum. Used morning and evening prior to moisturizer, Visionnaire improves the appearance of wrinkles, pores and uneven texture, leaving skin visibly transformed. In fact, after four weeks of use, one out of two women previously tempted by a cosmetic procedure (um, isn’t that the world? ) decided to postpone it. It’s hard to imagine a better endorsement!

A Denim Date with ELLE and Lucky Brand

One look at my Looks to Emulate board on Pinterest, and it’s clear – denim is my go-to wardrobe staple. With the exception of the steamiest summer days, it’s rare that I want to wear much else. So, when Lucky Brand and ELLE invited me to an Exclusive Denim Fitting Party at the brand’s New York showroom, I cancelled all other plans in the books and headed straight into Midtown.

There, I mixed and mingled with fellow bloggers including Wendy of Nitro:licious and Karen of Where Did U Get That? and best of all, the Lucky Brand Design team, including Creative Director Nico Peyrache (below, with moi!) Nico met with each of us individually to help us find the perfect fit in Lucky Brand, and of course, to chat denim needs and desires.

As previously discussed, I’m committed to this all-American fabric (actually – that’s a lie, denim is from de Nîmes, France… #themoreyouknow), so I’ve got a closet full of dark denim and full color silhouettes that range from skinny to flare. BUT, what I don’t have is an amazing boyfriend jean, and that’s where Lucky Brand truly delivered, with the Sienna Cigarette.

Made of the softest denim imaginable, the Sienna Cigarette walks the line between easy Sunday denim, and dressed-up, date night denim. They’re truly the only flattering “boyfriend” style I’ve ever put on my body. I plan to wear cuffed with everything from my Isabel Marant wedges to my studded Christian Louboutins – after all, with denim like this, it’s all about embracing the contrast.

Explore the denim democracy that is Lucky Brand (they’ve got styles for all body types) online at LuckyBrand.com.

In My Cart: Matches Edition

Girls of a Certain Age, the new-ish blog from former Lucky EIC Kim France, is admittedly one of my favorite sites on the World Wide Web at the moment. One of the funniest, yet most inspiring, recurring features is the "I Can Shop Anywhere Challenge," in which Kim finds items she'd actually wear in the most unexpected of places, i.e. the fashion wasteland that is the FINGERHUT catalog. Admittedly, I'm not so into self-sacrifice (better Kim than I), so for the first in a new "In My Cart,' series, I instead devoted my energies to the carefully edited designer assortment at Matches Fashion, home to men's and women's apparel, along with a bounty of gorge accessories.

If given an unlimited budget, here's my top five:

Classic Hollywood Glam: Fashions of the 40s, 50s and 60s

At a time when men were men, women were women, and colour was a fantastic new invention, Hollywood epitomised the fashions of the age. TV was yet to become a ubiquitous household item and women’s magazines tended to contain more baking recipes than anything else. In such conditions, women looked to the silver screen for fashion inspiration. So just what were they wearing in that golden age, and how can you recreate it today?

Fantastic Forties

Screen Icons: Vivien Leigh, Ginger Rogers, Ingrid Bergman, Katherine Hepburn (above)

With fashion powerhouse Paris occupied by the Nazis and Europe under heavy rationing, the US became the leader in new fashions, with Hollywood at its centre. Restrictions on the amount of fabric that could be used in a garment meant that hemlines became shorter, and zips and buttons were little seen. Swing dresses were popular evening wear, and sweaters and cardigans were commonly seen on and off the screen.

Fabulous Fifties

Screen Icons: Marilyn Monroe, Jayne Mansfield, Elizabeth Taylor (above), Joan Collins

With the war over, the Fifties saw a more glamorous approach to fashion. Top designers like Christian Dior became household names, and women’s styles were becoming more daring. At the same time, trousers and suits became accepted women’s wear. But eye-catching 1950s dresses were certainly not in short supply. Maxi dresses in a variety of colourful and floral patterns were coming into fashion, as hemlines went down for the first time since the 1920s. With their elegance and sophistication, 1950s vintage dresses can look great for special occasions, while a 1950s wedding dress can make your big day even more special, and please gran immensely.

Swinging Sixties

Screen Icons: Raquel Welch, Brigitte Bardot (above), Faye Dunaway, Jane Fonda

Flower power, free love, the cold war and the moon landings were all hallmarks of the Sixties, as were mini-skirts, PVC dresses and bell-bottoms. Colourful stripy patterns were all the rage, and with the hippy craze came tie-dyed summer dresses, perfect for cavorting freely about some sun-kissed meadow or heading for the beach in a camper van. Hollywood has inspired and even led fashion trends for generations, and by drawing on the influence of the silver screen and checking out the vintage dresses in specialist shops and markets, you can recreate the innovative styles of the Forties, the glamour of the Fifties or that carefree ‘Summer of Love’ feel of the Sixties.

What's your favorite decade for style? Do tell all in the comments!

Fashion Bucket List: Tom Ford's Astrid Sunglasses

I'm never one to underestimate the power of a good accessory, and among the GREATEST accessories I can think of is a gorgeous pair of designer sunglasses.

Be they classic or statement-making, sunglasses can alter, upgrade or add playful charm to a look in an instant. And while I choose from a WARDROBE of shades daily - including aviators, oversized and the classic Ray-Ban Wayfarer, my go-to will always be a stellar pair of cat eyes.

For the perfect cat eye, let me direct your attention to the Tom Ford Astrid, seen above.

These uber-classic and undeniably retro shades add instant GLAMOUR (all caps required, friends) and quirky sophistication to any look.  My fave way to wear 'em - excluding EVERY way, of course - is with a blunt bang, a bold red lip and a very big smile.

Available in five color varients, you can snag yours for $223.99, online at Ship My Shades. You won't regret it - I'm confident.

Disclosure: While all opinions relating to cat eye sunglasses are mine, and mine alone, this post was sponsored by Ship My Shades.
